What is a congenital disorder?

Congenital disorders, also known as congenital diseases, congenital abnormalities, congenital malformations or birth defects are those that are present at birth and may result from genetic factors, prenatal influences, or unknown causes. These disorders can affect various parts of the body, including organs, limbs, and systems, and they may vary widely in severity. Some congenital disorders are evident immediately after birth, while others may not become apparent until later in infancy. Management and treatment of congenital disorders often require a multidisciplinary approach involving medical professionals from various specialties, including pediatricians, geneticists, surgeons, and therapists. Early diagnosis, intervention, and ongoing care are crucial for optimizing outcomes and improving the quality of life for individuals affected by congenital disorders.
